On the 7th day of our trek, Saturday the 27th, we started our climb at midnight, fought through pain, fatigue, frigid temperature, dangerous winds, and 1300 vertical meters of climbing to end up on the summit at 6:15am, just as the sun was breaking the crest of the eastern horizon. Of course, we were the first ones up the mountain that particular morning so effectively "we won" but I can easily say that the morning of the summit was the most grueling physical and mental experience I've ever had. Fortunately it was dark for 5 of the 6 hours of the hike so all we had to focus on was putting one foot in front of the other. Trust me, that was enough.
Pictures to come...
So tomorrow we're off to Arusha, about an hour's bus ride from where we are now. We spend the night there and then start our 6-day safari the day after.
